  • Running on empty

  • Excerpt:

Kenya, Sunday morning August 24th, 2008. At exactly six minutes and 39 seconds past half four, the country exploded with joy. Rich or poor, young or old, even tribal background did not bother anyone at that particular moment. In Beijing, Samuel Wanjiru had just won the Olympic marathon and crushed his competitors. Kenya, as leading running nation, was now also on the top podium in the king’s run, a position that up until now had always been reserved for other nations. In the bars, glasses were filled and singing and dancing crowds wandered through the dark streets.
